Ted Kravitz apologises as he steps in to commentate amid Sky issues

Ted Kravitz was forced to apologise after Sky Sports F1 were hit with a technical glitch ahead of free practice at the Mexican Grand Prix. David Croft started the broadcast but then his microphone was cut minutes before the start of the session.

Kravitz quickly intervened to avoid confusion as the session started. He said: “I must apologise for the loss of commentary. Just as David Croft and all the rest were getting ready and into the swing of things it seems like we’ve lost commentary but we will work extremely hard to get that back for you.”

Kravitz then continued to fill Sky’s coverage, speaking to Haas team boss Guenther Steiner about F1’s cost cap saga. Sky Sports then quickly cut back to presenter Simon Lazenby and pundits Danica Patrick and Martin Brundle.

They eventually posted a message at the bottom of the screen warning viewers about the issue. It read: “We apologise for the loss of commentary.”

Croft and Paul di Resta returned after 20 minutes as Sky managed to fix the issue during a commercial break. Croft admitted he hadn’t seen as many worried faces among his producers when he finally came back on air.

However, social media users seemed to enjoy the lack of commentary on the channel so they could hear the cars’ natural sounds. Twitter user @LM_2302 posted: “Tbh, with these commentary issues on Sky, it’s nice just listening to the cars as they race around the track, rather than having commentary the whole time.”

@unclefuzz added: “Thoroughly enjoying this alternative commentary version of FP1 from Sky. They should try this more often.” @Zac_greaves10 commented: “Sky please keep us on the ambient sound, I don’t want commentary anymore.”

@hacketmale remarked: “Sky’s F1 commentary team feed isn’t working. So now Ted’s chanting the odds. It’s unfair but I’d love Ted to commentate from the pit-lane.” But, some used the opportunity to take a swipe at Sky Sports F1 coverage.

@alextranger1993 claimed: “I wouldn’t be surprised if someone accidentally disconnected a cable in the UK and / or Mexico, but given how much Sky pay F1 (and how much #SkyF1 expect viewers to pay) it’s embarrassing that most viewers prefer coverage without commentary.”
