Supercars twist as iconic car axed

Supercars has been dealt another major blow with confirmation from the US General Motors will cease production of the Chevrolet Camaro next January.

The announcement – coming just one race into the new Gen3 era, which is seeing the iconic model compete against the Ford Mustang – will mean Supercars will once again be racing models no longer available for sale.

Shane van Gisbergen dominated in his new Camaro in Supercars’ season-opener in Newcastle earlier this month, although was disqualified from the first race for having a driver cooling box in the door.

The Holden brand was axed at the end of 2020, yet Supercars continued to compete with the Commodore until the end of last season.

In a statement, Chevrolet vice president Scott Bell said while the announcement was “not the end of Camaro’s story”, they were also “not announcing an immediate successor”.

In a separate statement released on Thursday, Supercars confirmed it would “continue our strong partnership with GM into the future”.

“While today’s General Motors (GM) news out of the US will have an impact on our racing product, we respect and acknowledge that change is sometimes inevitable,” the statement read.

“GM has been an integral part of our heritage and has played a significant role in shaping Supercars to become what it is today, the greatest touring car category in the world.

“GM has helped shaped the careers of some of Australia’s and New Zealand’s greatest drivers, including Peter Brock, Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes, Jamie Whincup and most recently Shane van Gisbergen.”

The statement concluded by confirming the Camaro would continue to race in the series “until at least the end of 2025”.
