Suits star Gina Torres’ advice for Meghan Markle: ‘Just leave room for magic’

Gina Torres arrives to Royal Wedding in red lace gown

The pair worked together for seven seasons on the hit legal drama, with Gina playing law firm partner Jessica Pearson and Meghan in the role of paralegal Rachel Zane. Since leaving the show, Gina has starred in her own spin-off named Pearson, while Meghan left the industry to marry Prince Harry. Gina admitted two years ago that she and Meghan no longer speak, but they got on very well during their years working together.

During her first few years on Suits, Meghan started wanting to express herself on a deeper level and to promote her brand more effectively.

To do this, she decided to start a blog called The Tig, where she wrote about travel, food, fashion and social issues.

She wrote most of the content herself, but would “hustle” celebrities to get them to write for her guest section, Tig Talk.

When she was designing the website, Gina, who is 13 years her senior, gave her some advice, to “leave room for magic.”

Author Andrew Morton wrote in his book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’: “Frothy, fizzy and fun, The Tig appealed to her fanbase, who appreciated her elegant style and her classy persona.

“At the same time, she envisioned using The Tig to express her thoughts on more serious subjects, in particular giving attention to social and political issues that affected women.

“Meghan, the aspirational girl next door, had created a site for other classy girls like her, who wanted to join the party.

“With the help of Jake Rosenberg, fashion designer Wes Gordon and Brett Haiman, designer of the acrylic purse brand ED Parker, who created a resign clutch with Ms Tig for Meghan, the stage was set.

“Finally, she also followed the advice of her co-star Gina Torres, who told her, using one of Meghan’s long-time nicknames ‘Nutmeg’, ‘just leave room for magic’.”

However, he explained, when filming started again, Meghan’s schedule did not leave much time for magic.

She would wake up at 4.15am, drink hot water with lemon, eat sliced bananas for breakfast and let the dogs out.

Then she drove to set, went through make-up and wardrobe before being sent to wait in her trailer for her scenes.

When working on a shoot, there is often a lot of waiting around and during these periods, she focused on The Tig.

She would scroll through Instagram for ideas about what was “trending, interesting and timely” and worked so hard on the blog, she would stay awake into the early hours too.

Meghan wrote most of the short, snappy contents herself, but also tried her best to get celebrities to answer five questions for her Tig Talk segment.

Mr Morton branded The Tig a “huge for discerning palette” where Meghan could share her life’s loves and her friends could as well.

The Tig ended up being a success, but Meghan took the site down when she decided to marry into the Royal Family.

She also took down her personal Instagram account, showing her dedication in terms of moving from representing only herself to representing The Firm.

Her former colleague Gina was a guest at her wedding, along with the rest of the Suits cast.

Gina later said she “enjoyed” working with Meghan but that they are no longer in contact.

Meghan Markle ‘immediately ruffled feathers’ says commentator

She told Glamour in 2019: “There are people you have immediate and incredible chemistry with that you align with throughout the years, that are sustainable relationships.

“I enjoyed Meghan when we worked together. We had a great time as we worked together.

“We bore witness to a great many things in each other’s lives while we worked together.

“But we were also in very different places in our lives and careers.

“Would she have been one of the people I would have had a sustainable relationship with years later if this phenomenon had not happened?

“I don’t know. Perhaps not, because we were on such different trajectories.

“And there are others that you do, and there are others that you don’t.

“It’s a no-harm, no-foul thing. I got to absolutely give her my love and my best and wished her nothing but happiness at the wedding, and that’s the end of the story.”

‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’ was written by Andrew Morton and published by Michael O’Mara in 2018. It is available here.
