New Year’s Eve is around the corner, so you might be thinking about ways to get glam.
Unfortunately, plenty of hair styling videos and tutorials don’t take coily, Afro and other textured types into account – meaning a huge group of people are often missed out.
But that’s where the work of Pattern Beauty, a haircare brand developed by Tracee Ellis Ross, comes into play.
The team have come up six different hairstyles for these hair types specifically – with tutorials and recommendations for each.
So there’s plenty of inspiration to get stuck into as we approach New Year’s Eve.
Which of these takes your fancy?
Faux hawk
A standout style, and Ebony Bomani, Pattern Beauty’s brand educator, says: ‘Want something with a little edge? This is for you.
‘For hair that is short to medium, lengthwise, the Faux Hawk is perfect when you’re between wash and gos, allowing you to slick up the sides and letting your juicy curls and coils do all of the talking.’
Pro tip: Use the arches of your eyebrows as guides when deciding where to pin up your Faux Hawk.

Tracee-inspired braids
Ebony says: ‘Loved and approved by Tracee Ellis Ross, this is a fun alternative to your classic cornrow protective style. With braids in the front to frame your face, you can really dress this style up or down with the optional addition of gold hair cuffs.
‘When braiding, apply a gel for a fresh, tidy look that will last.
‘For more character, finger coil the last 1/2 inch to 1 inch of each braid.’

Coily ponytail
Smooth and secure a ponytail with the styling cream to boost moisture and shine, while assisting with ease of styling and providing a touchable hold.
Ebony says: ‘After fastening your ponytail, take a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch strand of hair, wrap it around the elastic band and pin it for a neater look.
‘Shingle or finger coil your loose hair for high definition.
‘Tie your edges down with a hair wrap and sit under the dryer for at least 20 minutes for more staying power.’

Space buns
An iconic style previously worn by Mel B, space buns are ideal for those with medium to long hair.
Ebony says: ‘Part your hair down the center, gather and fasten the hair on either side above each ear using styling cream.
‘It will add moisture and definition to your curls and coils as they sit pretty.
‘Add more interest to the style with a wavy or zig-zag center part.’

Two-in-one
Ebony says: ‘Create a deep side part, then wet set your twists to create beautifully defined curls and coils.
‘Once dry, smooth one side of your hair back with gel and add a festive hair accessory.
‘To sprinkle some extra glam on your holiday look, add a little glitter to the gel.
‘Wear your twists for at least three days for stunning twist out definition.’

Sleek bun
A little different from the Space Buns, this look is sleeker.
Ebony says: ‘Use gel to twist and twirl your ponytail into one or two buns, depending on your hair’s thickness, for smooth results and concealed fly aways.
‘Secure with bobby pins. Perfect if you want a snatched look with added spice this festive period.
‘Pre-section and leave out baby hair before styling your bun.’
