Strictly’s Amy Dowden speaks out on ‘new boob’ following breast cancer battle
Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden has revealed she’s very pleased with the result of her reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy.
The BBC star, who has bravely been sharing her journey of recovery following being diagnosed with breast cancer, took to Instagram to update her 413,000 Instagram followers on her latest health news.
In the video, Amy was joined by Dragon’s Den star and impressive entrepreneur Sara Davies, 39, who competed on Strictly back in 2021 with professional partner Aljaž Škorjanec.
Amy explained that, as part of her recovery, she required an injection that Sara was going to help administer.
The pair then went on to speak excitedly about Amy’s “new boob”, as they marvelled at the successful surgery.
“What did I show you last night?” Amy asked Sara, before adding: “I got the new boob! What did you think?”
“Nice boob,” Sara continued, as Amy quipped: “Do you know what she said? You should get the other one done!
Sara started laughing, before insisting: “I just said that is one good-looking boob and they’ve done a marvellous job!”
“Other than the nipple, you wouldn’t really know, would you?” Amy agreed.
In the next clip, Sara confirmed that the injection had been completed, quipping that she was relieved at how Amy reacted, as she was worried the star might “cry or scream at me”.
Amy then went on to share more details about the procedure with her followers.
“So many of you have asked, so I wanted to clear this up,” she said. “I’ve had a full mastectomy.
“The breast tissue has gone and I had no choice. I had more than one tumour, so I had no option but to remove the whole breast and they told me I probably have to have an expander.”
Amy went on to explain how the skin around her breasts is “really thin and delicate after all its been through”.
“They said that if they could they would put the implant in,” she recalled.
“I woke up and they’d managed to put the implant in,” she added happily. “I have had reconstruction.”
Adding a disclaimer that she was “no doctor” and wasn’t speaking with expert medical knowledge, she said: “I believe you can, later on, get the nipple tattooed.
“I’m not sure if I’m going to do that yet, but I’m no doctor so don’t quote me on what the expander is,” she continued, before explaining that it involved having a “tube under the skin”.
Amy also told her followers how she hadn’t been focused on the reconstructive aspect of her surgery at the time.
“At the time, I was just like, ‘Get the cancer out of me!’” she admitted.
