SpaceX has revealed that it has no plans to bring the Starlink satellite service to China, as per a report by GizmoChina based upon inputs from a Tesla China spokesperson.
As per the report, SpaceX has to comply with the rules and regulations of Mainland China and that includes production of electric vehicles and operation; all Model 3 and Model Y EV will be produced and sold as per the Chinese standards. But, “Starlink and its related supporting equipment will not be installed.”, the report quotes the spokesperson as saying so.
Currently, SpaceX has around 1,500 of the Starlink internet satellites orbiting the Earth, with their numbers only set to increase. Google had teamed up with SpaceX to provide cloud services. With the help of this partnership, SpaceX can set up ground stations inside the data centres of Google connected to the Starlink satellites to provide internet access on Earth.
This service is expected to be available in the second half of 2021 for enterprise customers, the company had said. Before Google, Microsoft had come on board to connect its Azure cloud computing platform to Starlink.
Competing with SpaceX’s Starlink is Amazon’s Project Kuiper with the help of which the tech giant aims to place its own satellites in the Earth’s orbit and create a constellation of them, with the planned number of satellites being 3,236. This is going to take some years at least.The company claims its plan is to provide “fast, affordable broadband in places where access is unreliable or expensive, or where it doesn’t exist at all.”
