According to a recent report from Bloomberg‘s Jason Schreier, the highly anticipated remake of Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic has shifted to a new development team. The game was previously co-developed by both Aspyr Media and Saber Interactive but is now being helmed completely by one of Saber’s Eastern European studios.
The Knights Of The Old Republic remake had a turbulent journey full of questionable development choices since its initial announcement. It was previously hinted at by Jason Schreier that Bioware, the creators of the original game, would not be involved in the remake in any capacity. Schreier also revealed that the game has lost both its art director and design director, as they were both fired from Aspyr Media, naturally leading the game to be delayed for an indefinite period of time.
Recently, a report by PC Gamer seemed to suggest the Star Wars: KOTOR remake could still be released this year, but was quickly shot down by Schreier. The basis of that report was that the game was originally being worked on by two developers under the mega gaming corporate Embracer Group, which was to be handed to another developer from their studios, and that would speed up the development noticeably. However, the recent report from Bloomberg has talked about how hard it is for a new studio to adapt to an unfamiliar code.
This struggle will surely lead any studio to take a longer time to bring the game up to shape, or as Bloomberg mentioned, modify previous decisions made for the project, which might end up making the project less ambitious that it was intended. However, Embracer said in an earnings report that it is not “expecting any material delays” due to the transition, and people close to the project have mentioned that they are optimistic this change will lead to a better product in the long run. The main reason was seemingly that Embracer with displeased with Aspyr’s progress with the game.
Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic Remake was officially revealed with a short teaser trailer during the PlayStation Showcase on September 9th, 2021, with no release date mentioned. The product was promised to be a massive AAA revival of the iconic Bioware game with the same name. Sabre Interactive joined Aspyr Media in developing the game on May 19th, 2022, and after that, there was no clear view of the progress of the game or any evidence of its intended release date. Star Wars KOTOR remake is slated to release on Playstation 5 and PC.
