Spider-Man Gets Savage in New Series from Joe Kelly, Gerardo Sandoval

Spider-Man Gets Savage in New Series from Joe Kelly, Gerardo Sandoval

Writer Joe Kelly and artist Gerardo Sandoval give Peter Parker a monstrous makeover in the Savage Spider-Man five-issue miniseries.

Peter Parker will be going on a wild adventure in the pages of Savage Spider-Man.

Spider-Man has undergone his fair share of monstrous mutations, but in Savage Spider-Man, the wall-crawler’s life gets turned upside-down in ways he can’t ignore. Written by Joe Kelly, drawn by Gerardo Sandoval with cover art by Nick Bradshaw, the five-issue miniseries follows a mutated Spidey in the wake of Non-Stop Spider-Man as he gains powers beyond his control. In a press release for the title, Marvel warns, “Forget everything you know about Spider-Man. All rules and regulations are out the door and Peter Parker may never be the same!”

In the pulse-pounding pages of Non-Stop Spider-Man, a battle with Baron Zemo ended with Peter becoming a spider-creature with six legs, clawed hands and eight eyes. On the surface, the look harkens had to Spidey’s “Six-Arms Saga” or his appearance as Man-Spider in the ’90s. However, editor Nick Lowe hints that there’s more to this mutation than meets the eye. “You may think you’ve seen a monstrous or vicious Spider-Man before, but never like this,” he said. “This book is so intense that you’re going to need to put it down between pages to get your breath back.”

Sandoval is no stranger to the giant Spidey-themed beasts, having previously drawn a multitude of monsters in Extreme Carnage. Speaking on this latest series, he said, “Spider-Man is a huge joy to draw and now we have a Savage Spider-Man who provides an even bigger challenge for an artist.” Sandoval also had high praise for Kelly’s script, adding, “I can say that I am doing my best work here for sure. Joe Kelly is the kind of writer that understands an artist needs enough room to create great illustrations and it makes my work easier and more fun. I really hope you enjoy this new book as much as I do!”

This unfortunate development is the latest in a string of tragedies to rock Peter Parker’s world. Following the death of one of his closest allies, Spidey faced off against Kindred, a mysterious villain that took a special interest in ruining his life. Though the web-head was ultimately triumphant, the fallout of the battle with one of his greatest foes left him depleted and in dire need of a break.

With Peter on the mend, Ben Reilly picked up the mantle of Spider-Man for the first time since the mid-’90s. Now working with the Beyond Corporation, the new Amazing Spider-Man is uniquely qualified for any threat. That’s good news for the citizens of the Marvel Universe, since Savage Spider-Man‘s monstrous status quo shift may call for Ben to settle in for the long haul.
