Spain’s beaches are world renowned but Britons will need to take care this summer after 48 of the country’s best were hit with a ‘Black Flag’.
This year’s ‘Banderas Negras’ (Black Flag) report from environmental group Ecologistas en Accion, slammed several beaches in Spain’s most popular destinations.
Many of the beaches blasted in the report are in top tourist areas such as Alicante, Barcelona and the Canary Islands.
Calzoa Beach, in the northern Spanish region of Galicia, was described as the worst dog beach in Spain.
The report claimed that Spain was facing issues with “the proliferation of designated dog beaches without a prior environmental impact assessment.”

Beaches in Valencia, Andalucia and the Basque Country were also smeared in the Black Flag listings.
The Balearic Islands were given a Black Flag due to the high number of jet skis and pollution from parties.
Some Black Flags were given due to chemical spills, sanitation problems and noise or light pollution.
A spokesperson for the environmental group said: “We have to emphasise that ecological attacks will continue to occur as long as economic growth prevails over any other criteria and respect for the environment is conspicuous by its absence.
“Without a planned economy under democratic control, life will always lose out.”
The ecological group also issued 48 Black Flags in 2022 so there has been no improvement since last year.
On top of being unpleasant for sunbathers, dog poo can have an extremely negative impact on the natural environment.
Animal waste decomposes when it ends up in the water and uses up oxygen that fish and other creatures need to survive.
It can also encourage the growth of harmful algae and it contains high levels of bacteria which can be very dangerous.
