Sony PlayStation 6 and Microsoft Xbox Series X Successor Might Not Launch Before 2028 as Per New Documents

It’s been little over two years since Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox announced the current crop of gaming consoles in the market. Even after all this time, both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X continue to face supply issues due to continuous demand and issues related to semi-conductor shortage, COVID-19, and more. Fans in India continue to wait anywhere from weeks to months for restocks of both the consoles with stocks lasting mere minutes.

Since their release, both consoles have received stellar titles in their game library. Both the consoles play most of titles at up to 4K (UDH) resolution with around 60 FPS. While it’s just been two years since the PS5 and Series X launched, fans are already wondering when and what to expect from both a mid-generation refresh, as well as the next generation of consoles.

However, Xbox has dismissed every projection and forecast on the next generation of consoles. The Microsoft-owned brand believes that they will arrive sometime in 2028.

The statements from Xbox stem from the company’s recent responses to UK regulator Competition and Markets Authority, as part of the ongoing investigation into the Activision acquisition.

When would Sony PlayStation 6 and Microsoft Xbox Series X successor arrive?

The CMA questioned whether the Xbox’s acquisition of Activision and its franchises like Call of Duty could impact buying choices when the next generation of consoles arrive.

The Microsoft-owned Xbox agreed with these concerns by stating that buyers “are likely to re-assess” their console choices at the start of a new generation. However, Xbox also mentioned that they happen quite rarely, with the gap between generations somewhere 8 years.

Xbox further noted that it doesn’t expect to see the next generation of consoles before Fall 2028. Furthermore, the company also pointed out that if Xbox hypothetically makes any Call of Duty exclusive to its consoles, then Sony PlayStation has around 6 years to create a competitive franchise, when the next generation comes around.

With the CMA investigation heating up, it will be interesting to see if Xbox can jump through the hurdles to complete its acquisition of Activision, especially the potential antitrust lawsuit slapped against the company by the FTC.
