With Belle’s kidnapping by Dr. Starline, Sonic the Hedgehog may receive help from the Wisps, the stars of the new game Sonic Colors: Ultimate.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog #43 on sale now from IDW.
Sonic the Hedgehog has met a great number of quirky and colorful friends in his years as a hero, but perhaps none are quite as colorful as the mysterious race known as the Wisps. Hailing from Planet Wisp, the Wisps are small, multi-colored creatures that Sonic once saved from the evil Dr. Eggman. In Sonic the Hedgehog #43 by Ian Flynn, Jamal Peppers, Bracardi Curry, Thomas Rothlisberger, Reggie Graham and Valentina Pinto the Wisps make a guest appearance that might hint at things to come.
Picking up where issue #42 left off, Sonic battles the Deadly Six after they broke their way into Restoration Headquarters. It’s a tough fight to be sure as virtually everyone was taken by complete surprise by the Deadly Six’s attack. With Team Chaotix stuck in traffic, Whisper and Tangle stuck behind a giant metal door, and Tails flying high in the sky towards the fight, Sonic was left to fight one against six. Everyone took some lumps, but Tails’ latest gadget saved the day and managed to put the Deadly Six to rest. Sonic’s victory is cut short when he learns that Belle was kidnapped by Dr. Starline amidst the confusion of the Deadly Six’s break-in.
The only silver lining to this news is the appearance of the Wisps beside Tangle as she cries to Sonic. Belle’s capture is terrible news indeed, but with friends like Sonic, Tails and the rest coming to her rescue Belle shouldn’t have too much to worry about. The Wisps, as enigmatic as they are, are very powerful allies that can grant Sonic and his friends’ amazing special powers.
Debuting in the 2010 Wii game Sonic Colors, and also appearing in the new Sonic Colors: Ultimate, the Wisps were an integral part in Sonic’s plans of freeing them Dr. Eggman’s vile clutches. Each Wisp possesses a unique power depending on its color which Sonic was able to utilize throughout each stage of the game. The yellow Wisps allowed Sonic to burrow through certain portions of the environment, Orange Wisps transformed Sonic into a rocket, allowing him to fly high into the air and Pink Wisps turned Sonic into a spiky ball that allowed him to adhere to surfaces. Other Wisps granted many more different abilities that helped Sonic in his quest.
Their appearance at the end of the issue might have been them simply being in the same room as Tangle and Whisper, but it also could have been a subtle foreshadowing of future events. After having dealt with threats such as Metal Sonic, the Zombot invasion and the Deadly Six, Sonic and the rest of the Resistance/Restoration have had their hands full in fighting some supremely dangerous foes. With Dr. Starline kidnapping Belle, the stakes are as high as they’ve ever been for Sonic. Who knows what terrible plan Dr. Starline has for Belle or what horrible new invention he has in store for the Restoration?
Gaining the powers granted by the Wisps could be the extra push Sonic and the Restoration need to save Belle and stop Dr. Starline. It would be pretty spectacular to see Tails fly his airplane alongside Sonic taking the shape of a rocket. The most important thing to remember about Sonic’s relationship with the Wisps is that while many are put in the line of danger for Sonic’s sake, they do so of their own volition as they know they’re helping a friend fight against evil. The Wisps were saved once by Sonic and they know it’s their duty to return the same help and bravery Sonic gave them in their time of need.
