Sonic 2’s Jim Carrey Heads ‘Pre-Quill’ Comic’s Dr. Robotnik Story

Prior to the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, IDW is releasing a Sonic the Hedgehog ‘pre-quill’ comic with a story spearheaded by Jim Carrey.

Prior to the upcoming theatrical release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, IDW Publishing will debut a 40-page “pre-quill” comic that features five different stories — one of which is headed by Sonic star Jim Carrey.

IDW will release a new Sonic the Hedgehog comic, Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill, on March 23. Writer Kiel Phegley, who also wrote the official novelization for Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, took to Twitter to announce that one of the stories within the upcoming comic is “spearheaded” by Carrey, who plays Doctor Robotnik in the films. “If you need any more incentive to order a copy of Sonic The Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill comic, the Robotnik story was spearheaded by the absolute G.O.A.T. Mr. [Jim Carrey]!” he wrote. “It’s really weird & dope.”

The five stories in Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill will bridge together the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog film with the upcoming sequel, which releases on April 8. The plot synopsis for the comic reads, “Life is good in Green Hills for Sonic the Hedgehog…maybe too good. He’s starting to get bored, and when Sonic gets bored, things become a lot less boring for everyone else — fast! Quicker than you can say ‘Chili Dog,’ the Fastest Thing Alive is saving the day and causing all sorts of chaos along the way! Plus, new and returning characters starring in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film take the lead in stories of their own.”

Along with Phegley and Carrey, the comic also comes from artists Evan Stanley, Tracy Yardley and Adam Bryce Thomas. Thomas also provided the cover art for the comic. “That’s like saying I wrote a Spider-Man comic and they hired John Romita Jr., Mark Bagley and Alex Saviuk to draw it,” Phegley posted. “It’s INSANE how lucky I am to work with this crew. Special shout out to [David Mariotte] and [Riley Farmer] for bringing me on board to do this. I’ll be honest with y’all…at this point in my career, I never thought I’d ever get a shot to make some legit four-color comic books. it was fun! I think I’ll do more!”

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees Dr. Robotnik return to cause mayhem once again, this time with the power of a Chaos Emerald. Carrey, Ben Schwartz and James Marsden will all reprise their respective roles from the first Sonic the Hedgehog film. The cast for the sequel also includes Idris Elba as Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill releases on March 23 from IDW.
