World Cup hopeful Brandon Borrello is returning to the A-League after a five-season spell in Germany.
The former Brisbane Roar winger has signed a two-year deal with the Mark Rudan-coached Western Sydney Wanderers.
“The atmosphere, the coach and the team is what has me most excited about coming back to Australia,” 27-year-old Borrello said.
“I think it’s a great fit for me and I can’t wait to get back.”
Borrello left the Roar in 2017 to join German club Kaiserslautern. He moved to Bundesliga outfit Freiburg a year later before and then had stints with Fortuna Dusseldorf and Dynamo Dresden.
Hampered by injuries – including a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee – during his time in Germany, Borrello is determined to rejuvenate his career at the Wanderers.
“I want to hit the ground running and get on the level of my teammates as fast as I can,” he said.
“I think with the team that has been built by the coaching staff, it’s completely up to us as we have the quality and we want to win trophies.
“I don’t want to be shy about it – we have a great team being built, so why shouldn’t we want to succeed in every way possible?
“Individually, that will all come when I’m playing well. The first job is to get into the training with the boys and make sure I fit in well.”
Borrello’s return to the A-League will also place him right under the nose of Socceroos coach Graham Arnold ahead of the World Cup, which starts in November.
The Adelaide-born attacker earnt the most recent of his four caps in June last year and wasn’t part of the recent Socceroos squad that sealed World Cup qualification via last month’s playoffs in Qatar.
However, a strong start to the season would help Borrello’s chances of forcing his way back into Arnold’s World Cup selection plans.
Wanderers mentor Rudan said Western Sydney was “proud” to have brought Borrello back to the A-League.
“Brandon’s experiences in Germany over the last five years have no doubt taken his game to another level and we are looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the side over the next two seasons,” Rudan said.
