Sixers sink to three-game WBBL losing streak

The Sydney Sixers have lost to the Melbourne Renegades for the second time in a week, falling well short of their target at Lilac Hill Park in Perth.

The result leaves the Sixers in seventh spot on the WBBL ladder, with their crosstown rivals the Thunder, who got their first win of the season today, the only team below them.

The run chase was undone in less than a minute, when they lost Ellyse Perry for 28 and then Nicole Bolton the next ball.

Bolton’s run out was truly bizarre – new batter at the crease Shafali Verma had the ball graze her leg stump, only for the bails to remain unmoved.

They hustled through for a quick single only for keeper Josephine Dooley to find the target with a direct hit.

Verma made the most of her reprieve, eventually scoring 20 off 15, while Maitlan Brown top scored with 31 off 20.

But it wasn’t enough, the Sixers finishing at 9-130, chasing 143 to win.

The Renegades moved to first on the ladder with the victory, just six days after easily beating the Sixers in their previous encounter.

Both teams will back up and play again tomorrow, with the Sixers playing the home side Perth Scorchers, and the Renegades taking on the Adelaide Strikers.

In Launceston, the Thunder locked up their maiden victory of the campaign, seeing off the Stars by 19 runs.

Tahlia Wilson scored 53 and Phoebe Litchfield 49 as Sydney set an impressive score of 5-133.

A stingy bowling attack led by Hannah Darlington and Samantha Bates, who both went at less than four an over, and Deepti Sharma who took 3-25 from her four overs, kept the Stars in check as they finished 8-114.
