Sir Anthony Hopkins: ‘There was something really wrong with me’

The self-described “artist, painter, composer, actor of film, stage and television” has been enjoying the “chilly weather in Ireland” lately. At 85 years old, Sir Anthony’s latest project is with Orange Comet, where he stars in his first NFT series, The Eternal Collection. Expanding his artistic expression into the metaverse, The Eternal Collection conceptualises the vast archetypes Sir Hopkins has portrayed over his vast film career.

Notable films of his included The Silence Of The Lambs (1991), Hitchcock (2012), and The Father (2020).

Before the clock hit 12 on New Year’s Eve, Sir Anthony celebrated 47 years of sobriety.

In a video post to Instagram, Sir Anthony said: “I just want to wish everyone a happy New Year and also to say I’m celebrating 47 years today of sobriety.

“This is a message not meant to be heavy, but I hope helpful. I am a recovering alcoholic. And to you out there — I know there are people struggling.”

Sir Anthony added: “In this day and age of cancel and hatred and non-compromise, children being bullied, I say: Be kind to yourself.

“Be kind. Stay out of the circle of toxicity with people, if they offend you. Live your life. Be proud of your life.”

Reflecting on his battle with drink in the past, Sir Anthony confessed he probably wouldn’t have had “long to live” if he continued to abuse alcohol.

“I just had to acknowledge one day that there was something really wrong with me,” he said.

Sir Anthony added: “So wherever you are, get help. Don’t be ashamed. Be proud of yourselves, whatever you do. Don’t let anyone put you down.”

Alcoholism

Drinkaware says alcoholism describes “a strong, often uncontrollable, desire to drink”.

Alcoholism differs from “harmful drinking”, which is another type of alcohol-use disorder.

Harmful drinking refers to a pattern of heavy drinking that causes damage to your health but without the dependency part.

“Someone who has alcohol dependence will often place drinking above all other obligations, including work and family,” says DrinkAware.

A person suffering from alcohol dependency could build up a physical tolerance too, meaning they need to drink more for a similar effect.

People who are dependent on alcohol may experience withdrawal symptoms if they stop drinking, such as:

  • Hand tremors
  • Sweating
  • A pulse rate above 100 beats per minute
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Insomnia (difficulty sleeping).

Anthony Hopkins starred in Meet Joe Black, which is playing on Tuesday, March 28 on BBC One at 10.40pm.
