Sinéad O’Connor had specific instructions for her kids in the event of her death.
The legendary Irish musician died on Wednesday at the age of 56, devastating fans and loved ones.
Police discovered the Nothing Compares 2 U star ‘unresponsive’ at her home in London, where she was pronounced dead at the scene; no medical cause for her death has been given.
As loving tributes continue to flood in, and stories of her kindness emerge from those who knew her, an old interview has come back to the forefront.
In a chat with People magazine in 2021, she revealed her children were well aware of her wishes when she died, and that her priority was to protect her work and not be taken advantage of.
She explained that, in the event of her death, her accountant should be called even before the emergency services – ‘because when the artists are dead, they’re much more valuable than when they’re alive.’
‘It’s kind of gross what record companies do,’ she said, referencing Tupac Shakur’s album sales shooting up following his death in the 90s.
‘That’s why I’ve always instructed my children since they were very small, “If your mother drops dead tomorrow, before you called 911, call my accountant and make sure the record companies don’t start releasing my records and not telling you where the money is.”‘
Her death was announced in a devastating statement from her family on Wednesday evening, as they said: ‘It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead.
‘Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.’
O’Connor died 18 months after losing her 17-year-old son Shane to suicide.
Her final social media post was remembering the 17-year-old, calling him the ‘love of her life’.
‘We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him.’
In addition to Shane, O’Connor was also mother to three other children: Jake, Róisín and Yeshua.
