Seven Dead Stars #0 Sends Its Offbeat Heroes to an Alien World (Exclusive)
CBR has an exclusive preview of the zero issue for Grammy-nominated Unsecret and UK-based DJ Form’s new ComiXology series Seven Dead Stars.
Ahead of the release of the ComiXology series Seven Dead Stars, a zero issue takes its offbeat heroes Unsecret and Form to a mysterious planet that features a curious blue dog.
CBR has an exclusive preview of Seven Dead Stars #0 by the Grammy-nominated Unsecret and UK-based DJ Form, with art by Cliff Richards (Batman, Justice League, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), colors by Michael Bartolo (Captain America, Iron Man, Star Wars), and letters and layout by Kathryn S. Renta (Wonder Woman, Call of Duty). Billed as a series for comic readers and music lovers alike, Seven Dead Stars takes place in a distant future where a band of unlikely heroes have to protect the survivors of an alien war from a ruthless galactic regime.
“‘Big things have small beginnings.’ That Lawrence of Arabia quote felt perfect for our introduction to the world,” Unsecret said. “We wanted to tell a story that felt small and character-driven but could eventually ripple out into a much bigger universe. Without revealing anything, Issue #0 hides a hundred secrets in plain sight. In time, and over the course of many more episodes, everything will come to light. But let’s just talk about this first adventure for now!”
Unsecret added, “As our letterer noted while she was working on the comic, there’s an ‘Odd Couple’ quality to Unsecret and Form’s relationship. We wanted that to be apparent right away, so even during a crash landing they can’t help but argue about who’s driving the spaceship. Things don’t get better from that point, and it takes the rest of the story for them to figure things out.”
The Grammy-nominated Unsecret continued, “The script is simple, and for the most part, uncluttered. We wanted to give our penciler/inker Cliff Richards enough information to inform him about each panel, but still give him as much artistic freedom as possible. Here’s what Cliff had to say about the process: ‘When I get a new script, it’s always a thrill, kind of like when you read a new book and start seeing images in your head. The only difference is that I need to translate those mental images to a piece of paper. The process is more exciting when you really dig the story, and Seven Dead Stars was one of those nice occasions. If I’m having fun working on it, then I’m pretty sure readers will have fun too!'”
“After Cliff’s amazing work, we had conversations with Michael Bartolo and Kathryn S Renta about their respective jobs as colorist and letterer/designer,” Unsecret concluded. “Just like with Cliff, we really wanted them to run wild, while keeping in mind things that felt foundational to the Seven Dead Stars universe. It was magical to watch the script come to life, and we can’t wait for people to see what we’re planning for the future!”
Seven Dead Stars #0 goes on sale Sept. 8 from ComiXology.
