Second wedding dresses ‘who they really are’: Kate’s ‘sweet’ while Meghan’s ‘far more her’

Iconic wedding dresses are remembered forever. But what about the second dress the brides chose? In many cases, the second choices are less traditional as rules for those are more relaxed.

TV and celebrity style expert Miranda Holder said: “I’m all for second wedding dresses – budget and time allowing, your wedding is an occasion where all eyes are on you.

“Being a celebrity or royal and getting married increases the pressure significantly so a second dress is a great idea, as it allows the bride to enjoy a variety of looks.

“Often on these occasions, the first bridal gown is a formality, a family heirloom, a political statement or part of the larger PR machine that surrounds them.

“Having a second option allows these blushing brides a moment to fully express who they really are, how they want to look – and more importantly feel – once the initial formalities of the ceremony and official photographs are over,” she explained.

Princess Eugenie

Princess Eugenie changed from her stunning wedding dress to a blush pink Zac Posen gown for the evening reception.

The stylist commented: “I absolutely love Princess Eugenie’s choice of second gown here. This is a perfect example of formalities being over with, leaving the beautiful Princess Eugenie to indulge her fashion fantasies and wear this beautiful feminine gown. The blush colour is stunning on her skin tone and I’m getting medieval references with the bodice – just beautiful.”

Beatrice Borromeo

Beatrice Borromeo married Pierre Casiraghi, the son of Princess Caroline of Hanover in 2015. For the occasion, she wore five different outfits. For the final reception, she chose a stunning Armani silk gown with diamond brooches.

Miranda commented: “This dress is absolutely stunning and a perfect example of simplicity executed perfectly equals the sublime. It flatters her beautiful figure perfectly, and manages to be a showstopper and understated at the same time.”

DON’T MISS

Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle opted for a simple Givenchy dress with a bateau neck but she then changed into a “sexier” halter neck dress by Stella McCartney showing her bare arms.

Her choice is a clear example of how much rules are relaxed with the second choice of dress.

“Once again, the Duchess of Sussex fulfilled her royal duties in a breathtaking, but formal Givenchy gown, and then changed into a slinkier number that was more contemporary, a little sexier and far more her.

“She looks timeless and elegant, I love this one,” Miranda said.

Duchess of Cambridge

The Duchess of Cambridge wore one of the most iconic wedding dresses of all time.

For the reception, however, she changed into a satin dress she combined with a cream cardigan.

“Unusually, the Duchess of Cambridge kept up the formalities with her second look, but simply scaled down in terms of grandeur and lost her enormous train.

“The dress is simple and sweet, the cardigan very pretty, but it feels like she didn’t have the opportunity to really relax on this occasion,” Miranda commented.

Princess Charlene of Monaco

Princess Charlene of Monaco wore a very classic wedding dress by Giorgio Armani but for the evening reception she opted for a beautiful ruffled design.

“What screams ‘celebrate’ more than ruffles and sequins?!

“In typically flamboyant style, Princess Charlene oozes elegance and is not afraid to inject a little fun into her second frock,” Miranda explained.
