Rates are soaring as ‘staycations’ become increasingly popular following Covid, the cost-of-living crisis and now as airport disasters plague flights abroad.

According to research by breakdown provider Start Rescue, some UK seaside towns are taking advantage of Brits who choose to visit our coastlines this summer.

Newquay, described as Cornwall’s ‘favourite holiday destination’, welcomed nearly six million visitors last year but was ranked most expensive, with one location charging £35 for an eight-hour stay.

Top 10 most expensive seaside car park rates

Rates to park your vehicle for eight hours:

Newquay among many other seaside towns removed its free parking facilities in June 2020 and introduced pricey tariffs.

Other expensive car parks include parts of Brighton, where Brits are being charged up to £31.50 a day to hit the beach.

And in Blackpool where fees can top £18.

Other pricey seaside destinations include popular hotspots Bournemouth and Weymouth, in Dorset, and surf spot Polzeath in Cornwall.

The research emerged as Brits bask in 22C temperatures today.

Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue, said: “Parking our vehicle is something many of us take for granted and it’s the last thing we should be worried about when taking a break at the seaside.

“We often find a parking space at the seaside, see the high cost to park, but are wary of moving in case we can’t find a cheaper space elsewhere.”

Puffett recommended doing thorough research before traveling and advised parking in spots further away from the seafront if possible because they are often a lot cheaper.

She said: “Choose wisely and you’ll have more money to spend on the things that matter most.”
