Samsung Mobile Signs a Multi-year Agreement With AMD

Samsung has just announced that it has extended its partnership with AMD for mobiles. The objective now is to bring in AMD’s signature Radeon Graphics technology to mobile devices. However, Samsung has also announced that the licensing agreement applies to the next generation of Exynos SoCs. Here are all the details.

Samsung extends 2019’s partnership with AMD

After bringing ray-tracing technology to mobile with AMD’s RDNA 2 graphics technology incorporated in the Exynos 2200, Samsung is now taking this a step further. Earlier today, Samsung announced that it will be extending its “Strategic IP Licensing Agreement” with AMD to a “multi-year” partnership. This time, it intends to bring “console-level graphics quality” to mobile devices using AMD’s Radeon Graphics.

While Exynos processors have lost their popularity over time, the first deal that Samsung signed with AMD back in 2019 hinted that it was focusing on its in-house SoCs. However, we do know that Samsung is currently all-in on Snapdragon chipsets with its 2022’s multi-year deal with Qualcomm. The question now is if we’ll get to Exynos processors in Samsung’s flagship Galaxy series anytime soon, especially after its no-show in the Samsung Galaxy S23.

Objective of the extended strategic IP Licensing Agreement

In its latest press release, Samsung mentions that it plans to bring “multiple generations of high-performance, ultra-low-power AMD Radeon graphics solutions to an expanded portfolio of Samsung Exynos SoCs.” David Wang, Senior Vice President of the Radeon Technologies Group at AMD said:

“We are excited Samsung selected multiple generations of our leadership high-performance Radeon graphics to advance the next generation of Samsung Exynos solutions.”

Therefore, it is evident that Samsung is most definitely expanding its Exynos chipsets, after 2022’s Exynos 2200. As for the when of it, while it featuring in the Galaxy S24 is doubtful due to the multi-year agreement with Qualcomm mentioned earlier, there have been rumours of a “Galaxy-exclusive” processor for 2025.
