Russian wonderkid, 16, extends miracle Wimbledon run to reach fourth round

Mirra Andreeva is through to the second week of Wimbledon in just her second-ever Grand Slam after defeating compatriot Anastasia Potapova in straight sets. Andreeva has already made headlines in this year’s tournament after knocking out No 10 seed Barbora Krejcikova, who withdrew from their match after going a set and a double break down.

That win set up an all-Russian clash on Court 3, which was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday night. The rain delay meant fans arriving on Sunday were treated to an early treat with Andreeva putting on a show once more.

The teen sensation and Potapova traded blows in the early exchanges, as neither player was able to hold their serve. But Andreeva soon grabbed a foothold in the set with some relentless returning to frustrate her opponent.

As impressive as her power at such a young age was, it was her pinpoint accuracy and ability to stay in a point she looked destined to lose that was putting her on top. The teenager finished with just four unforced errors before taking the first set as she won four games on the bounce before taking the lead.

The second set continued in the the exact same fashion wiht both players failing to hold serve. But it was Potapova who took the lead this time after a close battle in the fourth game.

The 22-year-old let out a huge roar in the direction of her team and looked on course to force a deciding set. However, Andreeva was able to find something extra to fight her way back into the set once more and bring the set level.
