Roman Kemp is so keen to avoid media hype about his love life that he says he’ll only sign up for Strictly on one condition – that he can be given a same-sex partner.
The Celebrity Gogglebox personality fears that he would become part of a “soap opera”, with the public speculating on whether his on-screen chemistry with his partner had led to love behind the scenes.
The 30-year-old, also a Capital Radio DJ, revealed his concerns in an exclusive new interview with OK! magazine.
“I think sometimes the show takes away from the skill of the dancers and it becomes like a soap opera of who’s dating who,” he clarified.
“The only way I’d do Strictly is if I was teamed up with Johannes [Radebe].”
He added that he would want to be “focused on the dancing” and not speculations about his love life.
“If I was teamed up in a same-sex pairing, it would be brilliant because I’d just be focusing on the show,” he continued.
Roman has celebrity parents – dad Martin, who was a singer in Spandau Ballet, and mum Shirlie, who found fame in Wham!
However, in spite of his glittering backstory, he has a history of shying away from the spotlight himself – especially when it comes to gossip.
The star avoids the showbiz circuit when he can. “You won’t see me stumbling out of a nightclub or at loads of events – I’m not that person,” he told the aforementioned publication.
“Even when I was a kid… when we went out for dinner with my mum and dad, I would always say to them, ‘People are looking at you’ and it would really annoy me.”
However, the award-winning radio host has had his fair share of attraction-attracting moments too, according to his dad.
Spandau Ballet star Martin, now in his 60s, relived an embarrassing moment with his son at a football match when he was a child, explaining that the action on the pitch made the formerly shy boy “come alive”.
“I remember once we were in the stands and David Beckham was taking a lot of stick at the time,” he wryly recalled to Kate Thornton on her podcast series White Wine Question Time.
“I was looking at Roman and he’s standing on his seat going: ‘Beckham, you w****r! You w****r!’
“I’m thinking ‘Where did that come from? Ro, calm down!'” he cringed, adding that he had been trying desperately to remain incognito due to having a major role on BBC soap EastEnders at the time.
