Retinol and CBD? We tried the latest buzzy skincare duo to see how it goes in the anti-ageing department
CBD has been creating a bit of a buzz in recent years, so we gave one of the latest brands using it in skincare a whirl.
Some of the interest about CBD, no doubt, comes from the fact it’s derived from the same plant as cannabis, but doesn’t cause psychoactive effects.
Instead, CBD is an ingredient that is increasingly being used as a natural alternative to traditional medication to tackle pain, inflammation, anxiety, lack of sleep, and even skincare issues.
A quick glance on Trust Pilot offers up awhole host of positive reviews from people saying Mission C’s products are making a difference in their lives, from reducing anxiety to easing joint pain.
Wanting to know what all the fuss was about, we also gave some of their product a test drive, with the Retinol CBD Moisturiser piquing our interest.
Mission C offer three types of balms, a CBD Heating Muscle Balm, a CBD Cooling Muscle Balm and a Joint and Muscle Relief Rub.
The heating balm is infused 1,000mg CBD, plus natural camphor, menthol and arnica to help stimulate blood flow, reduce pain and inflammation and energise your muscles, while the cooling balm contains 1,000mg CBD, natural menthol, methyl salicylate and peppermint to help reduce inflammation, decrease blood flow and ease aches and stiffness.
The joint and muscle rub, meanwhile, is infused with 1,000mg CBD, arnica, camphor and peppermint to help relieve pain and inflammation.
All three cost £34.99
Skincare isn’t something you might associate with CBD, but there is some research that suggests topical CBD may help protect cells from oxidative stress – a major cause of wrinkles.
It’s also been suggested CBD plays a role in skin hydration and helps to calm inflammation, so useful for tackling acne.
Mission C has a number of CBD skincare products, including a night moisturiser that combines CBD with anti-ageing super ingredient retinol, a hyaluronic and CBD serum and an antioxidant and CBD day cream.

Metro tried Mission C Retinol + CBD Night Moisturiser
‘I started using retinol in my mid-30s (I’m 43 now) and love the stuff. It’s easily the most effective ingredient I’ve used and has helped my previously dull skin look brighter and feel smoother, while also reducing fine lines.
‘So, I’m already sold on that part of Mission C’s night cream – but I’ve never used CBD on my skin. In fact my only experience with CBD was eating a bar of chocolate with it once (tasted okay and felt quite relaxed after but maybe not worth the hefty price tag).
‘Intrigued by the night cream’s positive reviews, however, I decided to try it out for six weeks and overall I was pleasantly surprised.
‘There haven’t been any dramatic changes in my skin but compared to some retinol products I’ve tested it seems gentler, causing less redness and irritation. It would probably suit people with sensitive skin who have struggled with retinol in the past.
‘The moisturiser is also very light and non-greasy, perfect for anyone who has oily skin and/or gets spots.
‘It’s got quite a distinctive smell, which might not be for everyone, but probably reflects the fact it’s 100% natural.
‘Finally, I could be imagining it, but I do feel I slept particularly well when using the cream…’
One man who noticed the many benefits of the cannabinoid was founder of CBD brand Mission C Qes Hussain.
His grandad was living with dementia and he noticed how CBD made him feel more calm and contented.
Impressed with its effects, Qes decided he wanted to break down the stigma attached to CBD and increase its reach by starting his own business.
And it seems he’s fulfilling his goal.
