Renee Zellweger needed ‘quiet’ to cope with the demands of her life

Bridget Jones’s Dairy is the 2001 blockbuster that propelled Renee Zellweger into the limelight like never before. Nominated for an Oscar because of the romantic comedy, Zellweger was offered a plethora of golden opportunities to work on big feature films. The Texan performer starred in Chicago (2002), Cold Mountain (2003), and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (2004).

Her work continued with the likes of Cinderella Man (2005), Miss Potter (2006), Bee Movie (2007) and Letterheads (2008).

Zellweger continued to work, year on year, on multiple projects until 2010, when there’s a big break in her credentials.

Reflecting on her mental health, Zellweger admitted to New York Magazine: “I wasn’t healthy.”

The 53-year-old said: “I wasn’t taking care of myself. I was the last thing on my list of priorities.”

Seeking help, Zellweger said that her therapist “recognised that I spent 99 percent of my life as the public persona and just a microscopic crumb of a fraction in my real life”.

Zellweger stated: “I needed to not have something to do all the time, to not know what I’m going to be doing for the next two years in advance.

“I wanted to allow for some accidents. There had to be some quiet for the ideas to slip in.”

While Zellweger made a comeback to her acting career in 2016 with Bridget Jones’s Baby; the break had been restorative.]

Ever since, Zellweger has been making movies, with the likes of Judy (2019), and TV series, such as What/If.

Mental Health UK noted that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has recognised “burnout” as an “occupational phenomenon”.

The charity explained: “Burnout is a state of physical and emotional exhaustion.

“It can occur when you experience long-term stress in your job, or when you have worked in a physically or emotionally draining role for a long time.”

Nine factors that could contribute to burnout:

  • Money worries
  • Working from home
  • Worries about job security
  • Isolation
  • Physical health
  • Sleep
  • Relationships
  • Home-schooling children
  • Caring for others.

The NHS differentiated burnout from stress, explaining that stress “is the impact of there being ‘too much'”, such as too much to do and too many decisions.

Burnout, on the other hand, is “feeling there is just ‘not enough’”, such as not enough energy, not enough time, and not enough resources.

Renee Zellweger stars in the Bridget Jones’s Baby, which airs on Friday, October 7 at 10pm on Channel Five.
