Reconstructive and cosmetic surgeons to gather in Amritsar – Times of India

AMRITSAR: To discuss and share the latest developments in transplantation, re-implantation, and body contouring besides refinements in these procedures so as to create synergy between surgical procedures and the aesthetic appearance of the patient, the national and international faculty of reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgeons will be gathering in the holy city of Amritsar on the occasion of 56th annual conference of Association of Plastic Surgeons of India APSICON 2022 being held from November 9 to 13.
Dr. Ravi Kumar Mahajan, Organizing Chairman, APSICON 2022 informed on Thursday that stress would be laid on making certain amendments in the Transplantation of Human Organs Act (THOA) 1994 , to do away the cumbersome procedure of obtaining permissions and simplifying the process for body parts transplantation.
Giving example, he said that body part transplantation from a brain-dead person was relatively a new procedure but it involved a lot of procedural formalities and required several clearances from the government. “If the critical time consumed in clearing formalities is cut down, it can prove to be life-saving “ he opined.
Mahajan further informed that there wasn’t any skin bank in Punjab and they would also discuss promoting skin banking as well as skin donation with the help of Non-Governmnet Organizations (NGOs).
“Skin grafting is required not only to treat burns but also to replace the burnt skin and also to improve the organ aesthetics and quality of life,” he said.
Dr Avtar Singh informed that this was after 40 years that Punjab was hosting the 56th annual conference of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India APSICON 2022 from November 9 to 13 at Amritsar. The last time APSICON was held in 1982 at Patiala besides due to the Covid outbreak, the conference was being held in physical form after a gap of three years.
He said other topics including gender reassignment and various procedures of cosmetic surgery would also be discussed.
Ravi informed that cancer reconstruction was another major subject that would be discussed by national and international plastic surgeons. “Besides saving the life of a cancer patient by removal of the affected body part, giving quality of life and aesthetics back to the patient was another major challenge for which the refinements in the reconstructive surgery will be discussed,” he said.
