Rebel Wilson partying so soon after her daughter was born is baffling

It’s not often I’m genuinely unsure how I feel about something.

But Rebel Wilson going out to a launch party with Paris Hilton in Santa Monica five days after announcing the arrival of her daughter, who she said had been ‘born this past week,’ truly has left me baffled.

To start, let me say, everyone mothers and parents in their own way and I’m a huge advocate of that.

It’s the hardest job in the world and everyone has to approach it the way they feel best.

And if Rebel and her partner feel comfortable leaving their little – and by little, I mean, tiny – one, then good for her, I guess.

But when I look back when I had my first baby, Theo, I couldn’t imagine leaving him when he was around a week old.

And not just because I’d had a c-section and was recovering from the physical aspect of giving birth.

I just… didn’t want to.

I was in such awe of him, and those first two weeks when my husband Tom was off on paternity leave felt like such a blissful little bubble that I never wanted to burst.

I couldn’t believe he was ours and I didn’t want to let him out of my sight for a second.

Rebel is an A-List actress – she can obviously miss a party or two without her name suddenly being forgotten (Picture: Instagram/@rebelwilson)

Kind of like the joy and excitement, awe and wonder that Rebel described on the Instagram post last Monday that revealed to the world that she was a mum, complete with an adorable picture of the newborn. ‘Beyond proud to announce the birth of my child, Royce Lillian, born this past week via surrogate. I can’t even describe the love I have for her, she’s a beautiful miracle!’

The caption went on to say –  ‘I am ready to give little Roycie all the love imaginable. I am learning quickly…much respect to all the Mums out there! Proud to be in your club.’

It’s absolutely no wonder that Rebel was so delighted. A new baby is a gift for anyone, but given how open she had been about her fertility struggles, the 42-year-old actress must feel that joy all the more.

So it baffles me that last Friday, a mere five days after Rebel’s post, the pair were out partying. There are also rumours Wilson attended Leonardo DiCaprio’s 48th birthday party around the same time.

It’s confusing – especially since Rebel’s partner, Romana Agruma, said of their baby (in the days following the party): ‘You start thinking about someone else instead of yourself.

‘Priorities change, when you think like, “Oh I wish I would go have a massage or something”. Like no, I just want to spend time with her and be at home.’

Let me be straight, no-one expects mums to stay in forever once they have children and be hermits for the rest of their lives.

But maybe for the first few weeks? Is that really too much to ask?

So I can completely understand the backlash that she’s faced over the last few days.

‘I sure as heck wouldn’t have left my newborn to go partying the week she was born!’ one critic said.

‘She can do whatever she wants, as can any mum, but it does seem a little odd that a week after a baby that she longed for so long arrives and she’s out partying. Even if it was for an hour or so, it still seems a bit strange,’ said another.

It’s obviously a controversial topic, and other people have jumped to Rebel’s defence, with one suggesting it is part of Rebel’s ‘job’ to go to these events.

But a lot of other mums have jobs – and also have maternity leave, so that we can concentrate on our babies.

Plus, Rebel is an A-List actress – she can obviously miss a party or two without her name suddenly being forgotten.

Of course, the actress has already revealed she has enlisted help in another Instagram post, stating, ‘I have an awesome baby nanny who was recommended to me by my buddy James Corden.’

Quite frankly, who wouldn’t with her Hollywood budget?

And this is presumably who was looking after Royce while the pair were out.

And I don’t doubt this nanny is the best of the best, with a shedload of experience, medically trained, a whiz in the kitchen and all the rest – which likely makes it easier for the parents to go out and trust that their baby is in the best of hands.

But I still can’t quite fathom why the pair would want to.

I remember when a friend of mine gave birth three weeks before her 30th birthday. She was the first one of us to have a baby and so, just after she’d had her little boy, we went out for dinner and drinks to celebrate.

Looking back, I can’t quite believe we did it. We clearly didn’t know any better and my friend, I think, was still trying to maintain a semblance of her regular life when it had just been changed completely.

We laugh about that night out now, and maybe Rebel will do the same in the future. Maybe she won’t, maybe this will just be the way she goes about the job of being a mother.

But Rebel, please remember the biggest cliché of all time is the one that is most true.

They don’t stay little forever – especially that little – so please, enjoy every minute of Royce.
