Ralf Rangnick hits out at Man Utd fans targeting Paul Pogba during Norwich win

Manchester United may have beaten Norwich City on Saturday, but it was a pretty toxic atmosphere at Old Trafford with Paul Pogba especially targeted by his own fans and Ralf Rangnic was not impressed.

A Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick was enough to earn three points, but only after a significant scare as the Canaries bounced back to 2-2 from two goals behind.

It turned out to be an excellent day for the Red Devils as both Arsenal and Tottenham suffered shock defeats, so Rangnick’s side’s chances of a top four finish received a boost.

However, the natives were not happy at Old Trafford, loudly protesting against the club’s owners, the Glazer family, and with the outgoing Pogba the target of plenty of abuse.

Rangnick claimed not to notice it during the match, but said that it isn’t right that United fans would target their own man.

‘I didn’t hear it myself but I was informed after the game,’ said the German. ‘I can fully understand the fans are frustrated, so are we, but I don’t think they should take on individual players. I don’t think that is right or correct.’

United are now fifth, just three points behind Spurs in fourth, although with a significantly worse goal difference.

Their Champions League hopes are very much alive again, although Rangnick was far from impressed with his side’s defence after leaking two goals to the division’s worst team.

‘Defensively I was not happy at all,’ he added. ‘The results elsewhere were good. But it doesn’t make sense to look to other results. We need to raise our game.’

United face a trip to Liverpool on Tuesday night when their top four hopes will be sorely tested, before a potentially crucial clash with sixth-placed Arsenal on Saturday.
