Rachael Blackmore sparks £200m Grand National betting frenzy

A nationwide gamble has propelled Rachael Blackmore’s Grand National mount into the favourite – amid a £200million betting bonanza. Punters piled the cash on to Ain’t That A Shame, now just 8-1 to land the iconic Aintree race, as the odds plunged by more than half from just a week ago.

The horse was previously 20-1 but has now dropped massively for the 175th running of race. Blackmore won the hearts of the nation on Minella Times, a former stablemate of this year’s runner, when she became the first female jockey to triumph in 2021.

And one of her 39 opponents this time, in front of a worldwide audience of 500million, is her partner Brian Hayes. The other half of the National Hunt power couple will be on 14-1 chance Mr Incredible – another contender attracting support from punters.

Ice-cool Blackmore dismissed talk of rivalry between them, as they go head-to-head for a first prize of £500,000. “Everyone down at the start is in with a chance, that’s the kind of race it is,” she said.

“It’s really exciting to be part of it, on such a good horse – I can’t wait. You might be on the favourite but it doesn’t carry the same pressure as Cheltenham, as there are so many different variables in the National.

“You are delighted to be down there, give it a crack and see what happens.” Stakes on Ain’t That A Shame, backed at all rates down from 20-1, will add to a flurry of late bets on the four-mile, two-and-a-half furlong contest.

Blackmore warmed up for her big race bid with success on Henry De Bromhead’s Inthepocket on Friday – the trainer tasked with saddling her Grand National mount. “The ‘Rachael Factor’ is coming into play, with the money absolutely flying in for Ain’t That A Shame,” said the firm’s spokesman Lee Phelps.

“She is a real fan’s favourite and once-a-year bettors are backing her to win again. It’s a staggering gamble.”
