King Charles III met Joe Biden on Monday at Windsor Castle for a brief visit before the President’s trip to Lithuania.
Express.co.uk is taking a look back at Joe Biden’s visit to the UK in 2021 when Queen Elizabeth II was on the throne.
When the late Queen met President Biden, she chose to wear an accessory of significant meaning.
Queen Elizabeth chose to don her “Jardine Star Brooch,” which she had worn on numerous occasions in the past, including her Diamond Jubilee and Christmas speeches. It was one of her favourite pieces of jewellery.
Her decision to wear her beloved star brooch during her visit with the Bidens had strong significance.
It may have been a subliminal reference to the American Star-Spangled Banner, America’s national anthem.
Anthony French, a Diamond expert at Austen & Blake previously spoke to Express.co.uk about this brooch: “In 2017 the late Queen wore a familiar piece for her broadcast, the Jardine Star Brooch.
“Like many pieces in the late Queen’s jewellery collection, this brooch was also passed down from the Queen Mother.
“It is thought that the Queen Mother was gifted this symmetrical piece by a Lady Jardine in 1981.
“This silver and diamond brooch has a collet diamond on a knife wire between each of its eight points and has an estimated value of £170,000.”
Her Late Majesty additionally wore a beautiful pink dress for the event, looking stunning in the lush floral piece, combined with a statement pink hat and chic white gloves.
The late monarch completed her ensemble with a glittering brooch, her go-to three-strand pearl necklace, and her iconic pearl earrings.
Queen Elizabeth loved wearing vibrant hues compared to muted or earthy tones or black and white.
Royal insiders said this was a deliberate choice to ensure visibility during her 70-year reign.
In the documentary The Queen at 90, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh said: “She needs to stand out for people to be able to say ‘I saw the Queen’.
“Don’t forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, 10, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the Queen’s hat as she went past.”
The late monarch met 13 US Presidents throughout her lifetime, starting with President Truman in 1951.
