Probe after ambulance causes terrifying race crash

An amateur motorcycle racer in the US has survived a terrifying crash after an ambulance crossed a live track towards the end of a race.

The rider, Daniel Alexander, was travelling at more than 200km/h when the ambulance – with a rider injured in an earlier race in the back – pulled across the pit straight of the Roebling Road Raceway in Georgia on Monday morning (AEDT).

Alexander was able to serve and avoid the front of the ambulance, but couldn’t keep the bike upright on the grass run-off area and crashed.

Another rider following closely behind him swerved the other way, clipped the rear of the ambulance and crashed.

Both riders were taken to hospital, but neither suffered serious injuries.

A statement from the circuit said an investigation would be carried out.

“The ambulance was leaving the track to transport an injured rider from an earlier incident,” the statement read.

“Due to a miscommunication between the ambulance driver and race officials the ambulance crossed in front of two motorcycles.

“Both riders did fall but walked away from the crash. [The governing body] is investigating what led to this incident and will be instituting any necessary changes to prevent the same thing from happening in the future.”
