Potter ‘rejects Leicester’ after Chelsea axe as Foxes eye Celtic boss

Axed Chelsea boss Graham Potter has reportedly turned down an approach from Leicester to be their next head coach just 24 hours after leaving Stamford Bridge. Reports claim he intends to enjoy a break after being sacked by Todd Boehly and co. Potter was dismissed on the same evening as Brendan Rodgers on Sunday, and an approach was made for Potter to replace the Northern Irish coach only a day later.

However, talkSPORT have claimed that Potter has turned down an approach from Leicester and is set to take a break from coaching. While the Foxes are putting Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou on their shortlist for Rodgers’ successor.

While Rafa Benitez is also on Leicester’s list as a short-term option as they look to avoid relegation this season, following their 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace that sealed Rodgers’ fate. Potter was let go after defeat on Saturday also, as a home loss to Aston Villa ensured that the most expensive managerial hire in history would be sacked without a full season in the job.

Potter is expected to take a break from the sport after a gruelling spell at Stamford Bridge that lasted just seven months as the Blues were languishing in mid-table, as he is likely to spend some time away from football until at least the end of the season.

Leicester’s Thai owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha is due back in the UK to lead the search for a new manager to replace Rodgers, while first-team coaches Adam Sadler and Mike Stowell are preparing the team for their next Premier League game with Villa.

Chief executive Susan Whelan and director of football Jon Rudkin have started work to identify a successor to Rodgers, but will now have to look outside of Potter and instead to the likes of Postecoglou or Benitez.

Bruno Saltor, who moved to Chelsea from Brighton with Potter, was placed in interim charge by Boehly and co and he is expected to be in charge for Tuesday’s clash with Liverpool.

Though it is thought that the Blues are eyeing up a move for Julian Nagelsmann, who is out of work after being sacked by Bayern Munich and replaced with ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

Meanwhile Tottenham are also currently without a head coach after sacking Antonio Conte and were also reportedly interested in speaking with Nagelsmann, though they could potentially move for Potter at the end of the season, especially if the German ends up at Stamford Bridge.
