Pochettino can use Caicedo transfer tactic as Chelsea own ‘perfect midfielder’

Mauricio Pochettino could use Moises Caicedo’s versatility to Chelsea’s advantage if they successfully snap him up from Brighton this summer. Most often seen playing in midfield, the Ecuadorian has also shown an ability to thrive in other positions, which is just as well given that the Blues already have a ‘perfect midfielder’ within their ranks.

Back in 2017, Pochettino described his ideal midfield general as one who can ‘play box-to-box’, ‘read the game’ and be ‘clever’. British record signing Enzo Fernandez already fits that bill perfectly, and the new Chelsea boss will surely be looking forward to working with the World Cup winner.

Caicedo, meanwhile, who has emerged as a serious transfer target for Chelsea, may be concerned that Fernandez’s prowess could obscure his route into the starting XI. The Blues are reportedly set to engage in formal transfer talks with Brighton over the coming days to try and thrash out a deal.

Although many expect Pochettino to set out his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation at Stamford Bridge, which would leave room for Caicedo to play alongside Fernandez, competition for minutes would still be high.

Conor Gallagher and Carney Chukwuemeka are among those expected to challenge for a starting spot in midfield, which could consign Caicedo to the bench. However, Pochettino could wheel out a crafty trick to benefit both his team and the in-demand Brighton man.

Caicedo has already proven himself capable at right-back or right wing-back on the south coast, which could come in extremely handy for the Blues given Reece James’ patchy injury record.

The Brighton star is seen as a player with huge potential, having already racked up 32 international caps and played a pivotal role in Roberto De Zerbi’s side defying the odds and qualifying for Europe.

Fetching Caicedo’s £80million asking price would see Brighton make a monster profit on the youngster, who they signed from Independiente del Valle for just £4.5m back in 2021.
