PM will ‘continue to monitor the data’ as no new restrictions before new year

Boris Johnson has urged caution after the government ruled out further restrictions before the end of the year.

Earlier today, Health Secretary Sajid Javid announced that no further measures will be put in place until at least the new year.

It follows the decision to impose restrictions in Scotland and Wales, due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases and the emergence of the Omicron variant.

England reported a record number of cases on Christmas Day, with 113,628 infections, followed by 103,558 on Boxing Day, and 98,515 in the last 24-hour period.

Hospital Covid admissions also hit their highest levels in England since March – 8,474 people are in hospital are across the country, up 27pc in a week.

Taking to Twitter after today’s announcement, the Prime Minister told people to “continue to act cautiously”.

He tweeted: “We will continue to monitor the data carefully, but there will be no new restrictions introduced in England before the New Year.

“However, I would urge everyone to continue to act cautiously given the rising number of Omicron cases.

“Most importantly I urge everyone to get their first, second or booster jab without delay to protect yourselves and your loved ones.”

A total of 39,539 people tested positive for coronavirus across Greater Manchester in the week which ended on December 23.

The Greater Manchester weekly total has increased by 18,397 cases compared to the previous week.

The trend is up in each of the boroughs of Greater Manchester and the number of cases have more than doubled in Tameside and Wigan in that time.
