Phil Tufnell forced to care for wife after ‘brutal’ operation

Ex-England cricketer Phil Tufnell has opened up about his wife Dawn’s recent health struggles, explaining that he has been forced to pitch in around the house more as a result.

The I’m A Celebrity… Get Met Out Of Here! winner spoke about his wife of nearly 20 years on the Monday Mile with Aimee Fuller podcast.

The 57-year-old TV personality told Aimee that Dawn would be up for joining her in the gym, before revealing: “Well, she might not do it at the moment actually, because she’s a bit injured.

Aimee then enquired about Dawn’s hip surgery, which has meant that Phil’s “family role has changed”.

“It has a little bit,” the cricket star admitted sheepishly. “I’ve been looking after ‘the Duchess’.

“She had a hip replacement, and I know a couple of people who have had knee replacements as well and it sounds, you know…” Phil trailed off before putting on a flippant tone of voice. “‘Oh I’m just having a hip replacement or a knee replacement…’

“But it really is quite brutal, you know,” he added.

“I mean the saws come out, the drills come out, the hammers and chisels and all sorts.

“But she’s on the mend hopefully and she’s getting better every day,” the star continued optimistically.

Phil then confessed to learning about what a “dark wash” is for the first time, before adding: “Three meals a day I’ve had to make. I haven’t even had time to think about the dusting.

“I’m in bed about half eight absolutely shattered. But yeah, she’s on the mend!”

Phil and Dawn have been married since 2005, with the sports star having been married three times in total.

He was previously married to Alison Squires between 1986 and 1989, and to Lisa Bar between 1994 and 1998.
