‘Phenomenal’ Kerr claims prestigious gong

‘Phenomenal’ Kerr claims prestigious gong

Chelsea’s Australian striker Sam Kerr has been voted footballer of the year by sportswriters in England, capping off a stellar season with champions Chelsea.

Kerr, claimed 40 percent of the vote with Arsenal’s Dutch international forward Vivianne Miedema in second place and Lauren Hemp of Manchester City third.

Kerr scored 18 goals and helped Chelsea top the Women’s Super League table. She also scored the winning header against Tottenham earlier in the week.

“She works her socks off, she has the contribution to team goals, and there’s her own goalscoring record. Her work rate is phenomenal.

“She has the pressing and the work rate that every centre-forward in the best teams in the WSL and Premier League do,” Sky Sports lead WSL pundit Karen Carney said after the win over Tottenham.

“They all press with intent and Kerr is brilliant at that, on the front foot and starts it for Chelsea. Then there’s the ability to score and assist.

“The one criticism I have is that she should be scoring more. She has so many opportunities, and probably isn’t as clinical. “But she is the difference. If Chelsea didn’t have her, they wouldn’t win [the title].”

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah won the men’s award. Salah and Kerr, 28, are set to receive their gongs at the Footballer of the Year dinner in London on May 5.

Salah took 48 percent of the vote for the Football Writers’ Association award, ahead of Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.
