The first thing that may spring to mind when you hear the word rosemary is a lovely Sunday roast, but this mighty herb does far more than enhance a leg of lamb.

In oil form, rosemary is said to offer a whole host of benefits from improving brain function to fending off bugs. But the one that’s got everyone talking is its potential to improve hair strength and boost growth.

Just put #rosemaryoil into Tiktok and you’ll get reams and reams of videos of people showing how the wonder ingredient has transformed their locks.

One product that’s getting rave reviews at the moment is this rosemary Scalp Oil from Balmonds, the company behind the best-selling and award-winning Skin Salvation cream.

Evidently picking up what it’s putting down, users have dubbed it a ‘miracle’ oil, and that’s definitely piqued our interest – plus, it’s, quite frankly, a steal in the world of TikTok viral products, at £14.99 a bottle.

One chuffed reviewer wrote: ‘Miracle oil, you can see a definite improvement within 3 days. Great stuff wish I had found this years ago.’

Sharing another glowing review, one user who suffers from psoriasis added: ‘I use this at night and it helps calm my scalp and in the morning my hair feels healthier and I can manage my psoriasis better.’

‘I have only just recently started suffering from severe eczema on my scalp for the first time in my life and I really had no idea how to go about it,’ another review began. ‘Thankfully I found the @balmonds_skincare “SCALP OIL” that literally soothed all irritation and dryness after the first time application.’

Research is still in its infancy, but a 2015 study that compared rosemary oil to popular hair growth medication Minoxidil found that rosemary oil showed similar benefits at around six months.

It’s thought the oil helps stimulate cell turnover and improve circulation.

Another study published in 2017, found that rosemary oil may also kill some fungi and bacteria due to its microbial properties. So, when hair loss is due to an infection or a skin condition such as psoriasis, rosemary oil could help.

When tested by 100 people, 92% said that this scalp oil improved the condition of their scalp, so we suppose that’s a tick.

Balmonds Scalp Oil is 100% natural and vegan

Alongside scalp ingredient du jour rosemary, the other main ingredient borage, also known as starflower, is rich in GLA (gamma-linolenic acid), which aims to offer nutritious and antioxidant benefits to dull or dehydrated scalps.

The remaining ingredients, meanwhile, include another antimicrobial oil, tea tree oil, plus soothing and nourishing hemp and olive seed oils and naturally anti-inflammatory herbs, nettle, calendula and chickweed.

To use, it’s recommended you dispense a generous amount into the palm of your hand and massage thoroughly into your scalp. For best results, leave on for a few hours or overnight, as the above TikTok so illustrates, before washing out.
