Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has spoken about the late Helen McCrory, revealing that her character Aunt Polly will be a presence in the upcoming sixth season.

The esteemed actress died in April at the age of 52 following a private battle with cancer.

Cillian Murphy previously revealed the entire Peaky Blinders cast was ‘desperately sad’ to film the show’s final season without the actress – and now Steven has spoken about her lasting impact on the programme.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Steven paid tribute and discussed details of the upcoming episodes.

‘The loss of the human being of Helen, who was such an incredible person… was a great tragedy for audiences,’ he said.

‘We just felt that the energy of Aunt Polly and the energy of Helen persisted throughout the production.’

Steven also spoke about the show’s decision to continue to make her character’s presence felt in the upcoming episodes.

‘Peaky will never be without the presence of Aunt Polly,’ he said. ‘We decided very early on that we needed to push on and that we needed to finish it. We hope that the series will be a testament to Helen.’

Meanwhile, Cillian, who plays Tommy Shelby on the show, recently suggested a change of tone could be heading our way in season six, telling Rolling Stone: ‘I think it’s going to be very intense.

‘The word we keep using is “gothic”. Yeah, it’s going to be heavy!’

A recent teaser showed the return of The Queen’s Gambit actress Anya Taylor Joy as Michael Gray’s scheming wife Gina, as well teasing the impending threat of the rise of Nazism as the show moves closer to the start of the Second World War.

Previous trailers also seemingly confirmed both the survival of Tommy and the return of Tom Hardy as Alfie Solomons.

Peaky Blinders season 6 will air in early 2022 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
