Paul Mescal’s first encounter with Hollywood superstar Nicole Kidman was a slightly awkward affair after he revealed he was nearly naked.

The Irish actor, 27, was recently starring in A Streetcar Named Desire in London, which saw a lot of famous faces attend the stage show.

However, when Nicole, 55, decided to go backstage and congratulate him on the show, Paul was clearly caught off guard.

‘It’s been a pretty starry back-stage. We had Nicole Kidman come to the play, which was pretty cool,’ he said.

‘I didn’t know she was in, but then she came backstage and I was sharing a dressing room with Ralph (Davis) and Eduardo (Ackerman) and we were getting changed and were in our underwear.

‘We heard a knock on the door and thought it was the stage manager, so I opened the door and there’s Nicole Kidman…and I am standing there in sweaty underpants,’ he said while recalling the story on The Jimmy Kimmel Show.

Ever the professional, Paul pretended like nothing was amiss.

‘You would think the next smart step would be to put on some trousers, but there is something incredibly undignified of the act [of pulling pants on],’ he added.

‘It’s not like you want to be bent over, so I sort of half pulled up my trousers and we were chatting about the play and I said “thanks for coming”, and the door eventually shut and we all turned to each other and were like “what the hell just happened”.’

Speaking about some of the other stars who attended the show, including Angelina Jolie, Paul said the cast found out about who was there simply by spotting them in the audience.

‘It works as in somebody in the cast spots them in the audience and is like “holy s***”,’ he joked.

In the interview Jimmy, 55, also asked Paul if he had prepared a speech for the upcoming Oscars, in which he is nominated for Best Actor for his role in Aftersun.

While the actor admitted he hadn’t for a previous award ceremony, he said he should probably avoid ‘winging it’ this time.

‘I should prepare just in case because I had to give a speech before where I wasn’t expecting it and ending up just saying words that make no sense,’ he said.

Aside from his Oscar nomination, Paul might also have to be thinking about a speech for another prestigious awards ceremony soon.

Earlier this week he was also named in the best actor category at the Olivier Awards, which are being held next month, for his role in A Streetcar Named Desire.

The 95th Oscars will air live on ABC on Sunday March 12, 2023.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! is broadcast on ABC in the US.
