Patriots’ Jakobi Meyers has first TD of 35-game NFL career wiped out by penalty

Jakobi Meyers finally found the end zone for the Patriots on Sunday afternoon. He caught a pass from Mac Jones and took it 25 yards to earn the first receiving touchdown of his NFL career.

Or so he thought. As Meyers and his teammates celebrated, referee Brad Allen announced that Patriots offensive lineman James Ferentz had been caught holding during the play.

Meyers’ touchdown was wiped out as a result of the penalty. That allowed one of the NFL’s most remarkable scoreless streaks to continue.

Meyers is playing in his 35th regular-season game in Week 6 against the Cowboys. He has never recorded a receiving touchdown in his NFL career. He came into the gamne with 116 career receptions and 1,390 receiving yards, more than any receiver has logged before recording his first receiving TD.

Sunday isn’t the first time Meyers has come close to finding the end zone. He almost caught a touchdown during the Patriots’ 25-22 win over the Texans in Week 5. He was tackled just a yard shy of the end zone.

That said, Meyers hasn’t been completely shut out. He has recorded two passing touchdowns in his three seasons with the Patriots.

Meyers began his college career as a quarterback before switching to receiver, so the Patriots have had him throw the ball on trick plays. He has completed all four of his career passes for 88 yards and the two touchdowns.

Still, he’s probably hoping to get into the end zone as a receiver soon. He ranks second on the Patriots in red zone targets this year with four, so he will have his chances to finally break the seal.
