Patrick Mahomes has already one-upped Jalen Hurts ahead of Super Bowl 2023

Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts won’t face off in the Super Bowl until Sunday, but Mahomes has already one-upped his fellow quarterback.

Midway through the NFL season, Hurts was the betting favorite for MVP honors. By the end of it, however, the second-year Eagles quarterback ended up finishing second to his Chiefs counterpart.

Mahomes got 48 of 50 first-place votes and ran away with the award, while Hurts received just one first-place vote.

Hurts got one first-place vote, with Bills QB Josh Allen getting the other.

While Hurts put up impressive numbers in guiding Philadelphia to a 14-3 record and the Super Bowl — he threw for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns with six interceptions while adding 760 yards rushing yards and 13 scores on the ground — he also missed two games because of a shoulder injury.

Mahomes was even better.

The 27-year-old, now in his sixth year, led Kansas City to a 14-3 mark while throwing for a league-best 5,250 yards and NFL-high 41 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He also tallied 358 rushing yards with four scores.

It is Mahomes’ second MVP, after having also won it following the 2018 season, his first as a starter.

“I would never be standing here today without y’all,” Mahomes said in a taped vide message. “every day giving everything we have together, going for our ultimate goal: the Super Bowl. Let’s continue to go for that dream this weekend.”

Now it’ll be up to Hurts and the Eagles to see if they can stop Mahomes for winning his second Super Bowl title, too.
