Pat Cummins’ classy moment of leadership as Nathan Lyon lets loose at the pub

Pat Cummins continues to make every post a winner as Australian captain, including this impressive moment of leadership at the pub.

Video emerged of Australia’s cricketers celebrating a 4-0 Ashes win at a pub in Hobart on Monday and one moment was further proof why our country can feel confident it has the right leading man in Pat Cummins.

Long debates were had about a bowler taking the top job after Tim Paine stepped down, but Cummins has made every post a winner so far, cruising to an emphatic series win against the Old Enemy.

He also earned praise for stopping his teammates from spraying champagne during the trophy presentation so batsman Usman Khawaja — who doesn’t drink alcohol because of his religion — could continue taking part.

The following day Captain Considerate became Captain Sensible as Nathan Lyon led some willing celebrations in Tassie.

Lyon appeared to be in fine form in footage posted by Khawaja to Instagram, leading his teammates and members of the Barmy Army in renditions of True Blue and We Are The Champions.

But Cummins kept a lid on things, swiftly shutting down Lyon’s request to sing the Australian cricket team song, Under The Southern Cross I Stand.

Steve Smith lost the captaincy because he couldn’t say no but Cummins — perhaps to protect the sanctity of the anthem that’s sung after Test victories — put his foot down when it perhaps would have been more popular to let Lyon loose.

It’s also telling to note the 105-Test offspinner went to his skipper for the OK before singing a word. It’s clear who is in charge of this team these days, even when they’re downing a beer.

After not bowling a ball in the Hobart win, Lyon was the MVP of the aftermath, encouraging his teammates to “stand up if you’re 4-0 up” and earning rave receptions from a rapt audience.
