NFL Week 7 odds: Matchup of the week
Kansas City Chiefs (-3) vs. San Fransico 49ers
We get a Super Bowl LIV rematch to headline the Week 7 slate.
Kansas City won that game after storming back from down 10 in the fourth quarter, eventually winning 31-20. It was also the last time these two teams played each other.
Ahead of this game, both teams are coming off losses.
Kyle Shanahan, Jimmy Garoppolo and the Niners surely have revenge on their minds heading into this contest. Perhaps so much so that they overlooked the Falcons last week? San Fran was trending up with back-to-back 15-plus point victories before being stopped in its tracks by Atlanta, losing 28-14.
The Niners’ usually stout defence was picked apart by Marcus Mariota — of all people — and now has to contend with Patrick Mahomes, who’s having another remarkable season.
Throwing last week’s result out for San Fransico might be wise. Even after allowing 28 points, the defence still ranks second in scoring (14.8) and first in yards allowed (255.8).
Speaking of great defences, the Chiefs almost beat the Bills at home in Week 6 but were held to only 10 second-half points and lost 24-20. Mahomes still did his thing, throwing for 338 yards and two touchdowns, but he was constantly under pressure.
Kansas City’s offensive line gave up three sacks, which could be a worrisome trend going against San Francisco. The Niners’ 23 sacks are the second most in football this year (23).
Other notable NFL Week 7 matchups
Cleveland Browns vs. Baltimore Ravens (-6.5)
The Browns have lost three straight games but find themselves just one back of the divisional lead — held by the Ravens.
Baltimore’s inability to close reared its head once again last Sunday. Up 10 in the fourth quarter, the Ravens gave up 14 unanswered points to the New York Giants at Metlife Stadium.
It marked the third time John Harbaugh’s team has blown a double-digit lead this season and brought its fourth-quarter point differential to minus-42.
That’s a concerning trend for anyone looking to back the Ravens by nearly a touchdown on Sunday. With that said, the Browns have been even worse lately.
Cleveland suffered back-to-back three-point defeats before getting its doors blown off by the New England Patriots in Week 6. Jacoby Brissett has turned back into a pumpkin and the defence has given up the third-most PPG this year (27.2).
Both teams are in desperate need of a statement win.
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Miami Dolphins (-7)
Just when you think the Steelers are completely dead they go ahead and beat Tom Brady as 10-point underdogs. Now — somehow — they sit one game out of the divisional lead and have another tough task as 7-point road dogs on Sunday Night Football.
Tagovailoa is supposed to make his return to action for the Dolphins this Sunday just three weeks after suffering a scary head injury on Thursday Night Football.
The Dolphins are 3-0 when he plays and 0-3 when he’s been absent, so Tua could very well be the spark needed to get a talented Miami team back on track.
Pittsburgh’s own budding quarterback, Kenny Pickett, exited Week 6’s contest with a concussion. It’s unclear if he or Mitchell Trubisky will start this game but expect the line to vary based on who’s under centre.
Week 7 notes
- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were double-digit road favourites last week against the Steelers and lost. They’re in the same spot this week versus the lowly Carolina Panthers. Much is being made of Tom Brady missing Saturday’s walkthrough for a wedding but covering a 10.5-point spread could quiet that down.
- The Colts and Tennessee Titans both top the AFC South table at 3-2 and will square off at Nissan Stadium this Sunday. Tennessee has won four straight games against Indy and is a 3-point home favourite for the Week 7 matchup.
- New York’s teams are a combined 9-3 but neither is favoured this week. The Jets are 3-point road dogs in Denver while the Giants are also 3-point dogs in Jacksonville.
- The Patriots are 7.5-point road favourites in their Week 7 MNF contest against the Chicago Bears. Bailey Zappe became the first QB in NFL history to win each of his first two starts with passer ratings of 100+. With Mac Jones nearing a return from injury, there may be a quarterback controversy brewing in New England.
