Othello National Theatre Performance – Nafisa Ali, GGS
The National Theatre has recreated William Shakespeare’s famous ‘Othello’ from 23rd November 2022 until 21st January 2023. Clint Dyer, Director of Othello has beautifully reincarnated this tragic story which revolves around three characters, Othello, Desdemona and Iago.
For the first time since 2013, Othello has returned to the National Theatre. This production has held a lot of significance, marking the first time the play has been staged by a Black director at a major British venue. The Deputy Artistic Director, Clint Dyer, directs his extraordinary vision for this enduring tragedy, expressing his own interpretation of Othello, coming from his personal view as a person of colour.
The play starred three main actors – one being the leading man, Giles Terera, also known for his performance in “Death of England: Face to Face” (IMDb 7.7), with his outstanding performance of the main character, Othello. This play also featured Rosy McEwen, who was a star performer in “The Alienist” (IMDb 7.7), In this play she was cast as the amazing Desdemona. Lastly, Paul Hilton was cast as Iago, who featured in “The Inheritance” (IMDb 5.5). All three of these actors had an amazing performance which had caused many audience members to clap with a standing ovation as the performance ended. One person I asked said that “the cinematics and special effects utilised every scene of the show, and there not one moment of the play where [they] got bored.”
This version of Othello will also be broadcast to cinemas worldwide in 2023 via National Theatre Live – make sure to watch!
