Marvel fans were left utterly bemused by Oscar Isaac’s English accent in the upcoming Disney Plus series Moon Knight – with some immediately comparing it to Dick Van Dyke’s unforgettable take on cockney in Mary Poppins.

This week, MCU aficionados were treated to their longest look yet at Moon Knight in an explosive trailer, with Oscar starring as a mercenary called Marc Spector who has dissociative identity disorder (DID).

Also featuring Ethan Hawke as cult leader Arthur Harrow, the show will follow Marc as he becomes a conduit for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu and transforms into the titular character.

Marc’s DID means that viewers will likely witness him embody several different characters, which is why it makes sense that one of them would have an English accent.

Nonetheless, the small taste that fans received of the English accent in question had them scratching their heads, with several questioning if it was supposed to be that perplexing.

‘Moonlight looks alright, but damn Oscar Isaac’s English accent is awful,’ one person tweeted.

‘The most fascinating thing to me in the #MoonKnight trailer was Oscar Isaac’s English accent,’ another said.

Several emphasised that despite their confusion over the actor’s take on an English voice, they feel so loyal to him that they don’t want to question it.

‘Going to start talking like Oscar Isaac in Moon Knight to gaslight everybody into thinking that’s what an English accent is because I’m LOYAL,’ one said, while another added: ‘Please don’t tell me if Oscar Isaac’s English accent is bad – I just want to live in my little fantasy, ok?’

Hilariously, Dick Van Dyke ended up trending on Twitter because the Moon Knight trailer reminded fans so much of his character Bert in Mary Poppins, with one person saying they were getting ‘serious Dick Van Dyke vibes from Oscar Isaac’.

‘Oscar Isaac playing Dick Van Dyke playing Moon Knight was unexpected,’ someone remarked.

While there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding the Marvel series, it seems likely that the protagonist is American – as in the source material – and his English accent is one of several characters he will personify as his DID is explored, especially given he refers to himself as ‘Stevie’ in the trailer.

‘”The Dick Van Dyke” cockney accent works so much better now we know for sure it’s one of Marc’s personalities,’ one person tweeted.

‘I’m so excited to see what Oscar does with this, Marc’s such an incredible & complex character to explore. #MoonKnight.’

Moon Knight is due to be released on Disney Plus this year.
