‘One of our all-time greats’: Port Adelaide icon dies

Port Adelaide icon and Australian football hall of famer Geof Motley has died at the age of 88.

The Power announced their most decorated player ever passed away on Tuesday after a short illness.

Motley made his League debut in 1953 and was never dropped from the top team after that, playing a total of 250 games and kicking 156 goals.

He was the only player to feature in all nine of Port’s premiership victories between 1954 and 1965, and was named on a halfback flank in Port Adelaide’s “greatest team of all time”.

“Geof was one of our all-time greats, our most decorated premiership player,” club chairman David Koch said.

“Born and raised in the Port Adelaide district, all Geof knew was the Port Adelaide Football Club. It was his world, his life. All he wanted to do was represent Port Adelaide.

“And he did that with great distinction. Alongside his premiership success sits four best-and-fairest awards, a Magarey Medal and 28 State games.

“There have been so many champions of our club across more than 150 years, and a handful of legends. Geof Motley stands alongside Port Adelaide greats Russell Ebert, Bob Quinn and John Cahill as a legend of our club.”

Motley has a player race named in his honour at Adelaide Oval.

He is a life member is both Port Adelaide and the SANFL.
