Olympics medals table LIVE: Team GB up to 35 medals after historic equestrian gold
Team GB athletes are set to become overnight superstars with their exploits at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with the likes of Tom Daley, Adam Peaty, Laura Kenny and Jason Kenny chasing gold medals. It was five years ago in Rio 2016 when Team GB enjoyed their most successful Olympics in over 100 years after they finished with 67 medals, enough for second in the overall table.
They won 27 gold medals with six coming from track cycling and three more coming in rowing.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, expectations of exceeding their performance in Rio has been dropped.
But there are still hopes of another successful Games for Team GB with a host of athletes expected to challenge for gold.
UK Sport, who fund British Olympic sport, have set a target of between 45 to 70 medals for their athletes.
Gracenote said: “The reduction in medals for Britain is partially due to lower expectations in cycling, gymnastics and rowing amongst other competitions.
“In 2016, those three sports accounted for nearly one third of British medals (22). In 2021 however, these sports could produce as few as five podium places.”
