Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Oleksandr Zinchenko has missed Arsenal’s Premier League match against Liverpool due to a new muscle injury.

The Ukraine international has already missed four games this season due to a calf problem but returned for Arsenal’s 3-1 victory over Tottenham last Saturday.

Zinchenko was left out of the squad for Arsenal’s 3-0 win against Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

And after being omitted from the squad for Liverpool’s visit to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, Arteta has confirmed that the left-back has suffered a fresh setback.

‘He’s had another muscle injury,’ Arteta said of Zinchenko before the game.

‘Let’s see how it evolves in the next few days.’

Asked why Tomiyasi starts ahead of Teirney, Arteta replied: ‘Well we have some opportunities in that position, today we decided to start with Tomi.’

Arteta also dismissed suggestions that Arsenal should be considered favourites for their game against Liverpool.

‘We have a really tough game to play out there. It’s two really good teams who wants to win the game, let’s see who wins,’ said the Arsenal manager.

‘You just have to look at how Liverpool play, they are still doing so many things well. They have won a lot of games, and the games they haven’t won they have deserved to win. We know the opponent we have today.

‘It’s a joy to play with this crowd, we have to give them the right reasons to maintain that. If we play with the atmosphere, I think we are much closer to winning the game.’
