NSW has recorded 13,026 new Covid cases and an increase in hospitalisations and ICU admissions following the state’s deadliest day.
NSW has recorded 13,026 new Covid cases and the deaths of 27 people with the virus on Monday.
In the latest reporting period, 7362 infections were recorded from PCR tests and 5664 from rapid antigen tests.
There were 2779 people with the virus being treated in the state’s hospitals, with 185 in intensive care.
Hospitalisations and ICU presentations both increased from the day before when the numbers were 2633 and 182 respectively.
Premier Dominic Perrottet, Treasurer Matt Kean, and Education Minister Sarah Mitchell are due to speak to the media at 11am.
They will be joined by Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello and chief health officer Kerry Chant, to make an announcement about support for families with children, with term 1 of school beginning this week.
Fifty-two deaths were reported on Sunday, making it the deadliest day in NSW during the pandemic.
Dr Chant said 31 of the 52 people who died were aged care residents.
“And of those 31 people, just two had received booster doses. Twenty had received two doses of vaccine, two had received one dose and seven were not vaccinated,” she told reporters on Sunday.
Of the 52 deaths, 21 people died in aged care facilities and 31 people died in hospital, Dr Chant said.
She confirmed the new Omicron BA. 2 coronavirus subvariant had been detected in NSW.
“At the moment we don’t see that it is presenting anything different clinically in terms of the severity or its response to vaccine, but we will obviously be watchful, monitor the situation closely,” she said.
