Novak Djokovic explains why he interrupted question after Matteo Berrettini US Open win

Novak Djokovic breezed past Italian Matteo Berrettini at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Wednesday night in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3 victory as he edges ever close to history.

Djokovic, 34, reached his 12th US Open semi-final in doing so, having won the tournament three times in his career.

And vying for a fourth, another New York triumph would represent a 21st Grand Slam win for the Serbian – taking him ahead of the record that himself, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer share.

However, having already won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year, the Belgrade-born star has a chance to complete the calendar-year Grand Slam by winning the US Open.

It is a feat which hasn’t been achieved for 52 years, since Rod Laver completed it in 1969.

Added pressure is the last thing that Djokovic needs ahead of his final two games after he extended his Grand Slam winning streak to an incredible 26 matches.

But after being asked a question by Patrick McEnroe, Djokovic interrupted the interview – claiming that it could burden his mentality.

“Well, lastly Novak, talking about big challenges, five down, two to go,” McEnroe began.

But it was there that he was shut off.

“I want to really go back to the basics and what really works for me mentally.”

Djokovic takes on German Alexander Zverev in the semi-final.

And should he be victorious, Djokovic would enter the final on Sunday evening for a chance to make history.
