Nightwing’s New ‘Partner’ Bitewing Gets Her First Costume on an Adorable Cover

While Nightwing #91 gives fans some Dick Grayson/Wally West content, its variant cover provides the series’ breakout favorite with some new gear.

While Nightwing promises a fan-favorite team-up, one of its variant covers gives readers an adorable duo.

At the start of writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo’s run on the series, Dick Grayson saved a three-legged puppy from being attacked by some of Blüdhaven’s crueler citizens. Given the codename “Bitewing,” like Dick, fans formed an attachment to the dog by having the chance to pick her name, with Haley being the winning choice. Created by Serg Acuña, a variant cover for Nightwing #91 gives readers another glimpse of what Haley might look like should she start fighting crime alongside her loving owner.

  • Trying to save a city that’s even more beyond saving than Gotham is no small task, and even someone like Nightwing needs a day off to relax with his best friend and to recharge—but when your best friend is Wally West, a.k.a. the Flash, a “recharge” might not end up being so relaxing!

Because Nightwing #78 was so popular among fans, it was sent back for two additional printings, with the Riley Rossmo cover to its third showcasing Haley in a Nightwing-like suit, with the bonus of wings on the collar. Though the new variant cover gives the doggo her own domino mask, she has yet to suit up in the series, even after having to be saved by Dick an additional time. This was shown in Nightwing #87, which featured continuous art pages that stretched across the entire issue for a panoramic story of Haley’s rescue.

Despite Haley’s lack of crimefighting, Nightwing will be joined by another friend in the upcoming issue: Wally West aka the Flash. After being teased by Taylor on social media, it was revealed that the two Titans would cross over for a two-issue arc beginning in Nightwing #90. Wally has already appeared in the series alongside the Titans to protect Dick from an assassination attempt, and the two have also been seen together in the ongoing Teen Titans Academy.

Of course, this is not the only crossover fans can expect in the coming months. While there is no tie-in from Nightwing, Dick Grayson and Wally West will also be featured in the upcoming event War For Earth-3, which will have tie-ins from Teen Titans AcademyThe Flash and Suicide Squad, and be bookended by two special issues. The event kicks off in March, but there is no word on whether Haley may be featured in the series.

The last event Nightwing was a part of was Batman: Fear State, and in that story, Dick left Haley with some neighbors to care for her while he helped the Bat-Family fight the Magistrate and Scarecrow. Being that Haley still hasn’t suited up as Bitewing, readers will have to wait and see if she ever goes out into the field — except for when she is taken for a walk, of course.

Nightwing #91 goes on sale April 19 from DC Comics.
